Pyorrhoea Gum Infection

What is a Periodontist

Periodontics is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on the health of the supporting structures of your teeth. A periodontist has completed an additional 3 years of specialty training beyond the 4 years required for general dentistry.

During this time they are trained in preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease. Periodontists are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures such as crown lengthening and gum grafting.

Periodontitis/ Pyorrhoea

Periodontitis, also known as pyorrhea, is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium, i.e., the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Periodontitis involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth.

Reasons

  • Food Lodgement
  • Tobacco
  • Smoking
  • Body Diseases like Diabetes, bone  disease, blood diseases etc.
  • Conditions like stress, puberty, pregnancy, Menopause, Nutrition Deficiency etc.
  • Trauma
  • Some Drugs (Medications)

Sign and Symptoms

  • Swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Pus Discharge from gums
  • Bad smell from mouth
  • Loosening (Mobile) teeth

Diagnosis

A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a probe (i.e., a clinical examination) and by evaluating the patient's X-ray films (i.e. a radiographic examination), to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth. Specialists in the treatment of periodontitis are periodontists.

Treatment

  • Non Surgical Treatment

Periodontist will evaluate extent of disease and will decide whether it can be treated by non surgical approach. In Non surgical way source of infection (Tartar or hard deposits) are removed over and under gums by Ultrasonic or Hand Scaling with or without Local Anesthesia. Laser can be used in this treatment. After treatment Periodontist may advice for local drug application.

  • Surgical Treatment

If Surgical treatment is decided then it is done under local anesthesia. In this approach required part of gums is to be opened up to expose the source of infection. Once the all dirty part is exposed it is removed by various techniques and instruments. Periodontist may give you option for new bone formations, if it is required and possible. Different bone grafting materials are available to form new bone. Laser will be helpful to achieve best surgical results because of its precision.
